New technology has produced new terms to describe what it is, how it works, and the various workers in the business. With the addition of definitions comes confusion for those who don’t keep up on the new terminology. With a little help from this technology a person can add to their vocabulary and increase understanding of how these things work.

  • Black Hat - cracker, hacker, Dark Side hacker, Black-Hat hacker person who maliciously gains access to sensitive information that can enrich the hacker and lead to the victim being in debt.

  • Black-Hat Hacker - black hat, cracker, Dark Side hacker, hacker person who illegally access information about persons or institutions for the purpose of ID theft, or to steal money out of a personal or corporate bank account, which can lead to the victim being deeply in debt, sometimes having to file bankrupcy 

  • Brown hat hacker - hacker who consciencely plans either a malicious hacking or a non-malicious hacking. 

  • Cracker - black hat, hacker, cracker, or Dark Side hacker, Black Hat hacker person who purposely hacks the computer systems of financial institutions or other organizations to get unauthorized information and commit ID theft or outright credit card or other types of fraud. Often times this term refers to a convicted hacker 

  • Dark Side hacker - cracker, Black-Hat hacker, Black Hat, hacker person who gathers or attacks sensitive data in remote computer systems. This action can lead to bankruptcy, or the need for consumer creidt counseling for the person who is victimized. 

  • Expolit - a piece of software used to gain access to vulnerabilities on a computer system within the financial community or other industries. 

  • Glitch - a temporary problem or fault in a computer system or electronic gear. 

  • Grey hat hacker - a hacker who makes public any security glitches or weaknesses without regard for the outcome or how that information will be used. 

  • Hacker - person who purposely gains access to a computer system or softare program, for any reason, without These could include credit card accounts, bank accounts and other financial information that could lead a person to bankruptcy 

  • Phishing - social engineering sending out email or making phone calls that lead the recipient to believe they are being asked to reveal sensitive information such as credit card account numbers and PIN's to people authorized to have them. 

  • Phone Phreaking - phreak, phreaker, phone phreak describes the act of expoliting weaknesses in the Public Switched Telephone Network for entertainment of malicious purposes. Also refers to the frequencies that phreakers use in their craft. 

  • Script kiddies - a person who seeks system vulnerabilites through the hacking efforts of others. These individuals are the unskilled thieves that cause financial problems for families and companies with impunity. 

  • Social engineering phishing - or email attachment attack exploiting the tendency of individuals to trust oneanother, while at the same time underestimating the seriousness of such a security breach. The weakest point in system security is the individual who holds the sensitive information. 

  • Social engineering phishing - or email attachment attack using a person's trust of known email addresses to hijack, replicate and send computer viruses or worms. The person gets an email from a friend and opens it. Once opened the virus or worm is unleashed on that system which then accesses that computer's email system and replicates outbound emails to addressees in the recipient's computer. 

  • Software cracking - warez' cracking, 'K' finding cracks modifying software in a way that disables the code that would prevent copying of software. Copying of software constitutes copyright infringement. 

  • System administrator sysadmin, - sysop the person or persons charged with the administration of a computer system. Usually including the security and maintainance of the system. 

  • System operator sysadmin, - sysop the person or persons charged with the administration of a computer system. Usually including the security and maintainance of the system. 

  • White hat hacker - plays to the old western movies that designate the good guys as wearing white hats and the bad guys wearing the black hats. The white hat hackers often are involved in detecting security issues for repair with patches or reporting these problems for other fixes. 

  • Zero Day exploits - zero day vulnerabilities in systems that are kept strictly confidential within the black hat community or only to the hacker.
