Divorce and Finances

Just saying the word “divorce” gives most people of feeling of sadness. There is little lightheartedness that goes along with the visions this word conjures up, but nevertheless, it is a fairly common occurrence in today’s world. Statistics show that over 50% of marriage unions end up in divorce court so, unfortunately, that elevates it from the common status to the norm. With the process of divorcing being as prevalent as it is in the 21st century, it is also a widespread phenomenon to have a plethora of information written that is aimed at trying to help couples get through this procedure with as little pain as possible.

One of the greatest side effects of divorce is the financial catastrophe that can result. The largest number of divorces occur because of some kind of animosity between the couples usually accredited to incompatibility or even worse, the betrayal of infidelity. When this happens, many times the area that becomes the focal point of this struggle swings over to the financial aspect of separating. At this place in the break up, all bets and promises are null and void and the gloves come off. The nastiness and heartache that results is not beneficial for anyone, except maybe those receiving that final paycheck for services rendered. The upside to all this is that couples can choose to not have the situation reach this point where neither one comes out the winner.

Several years ago it was estimated that a divorce cost approximately $18,000 per person when all was said and done. Now, in the year 2007, that price is surely higher. Depending on the reason for splitting up, it is the general rule that the types where there is a lot of money to divvy up and the split is not amicable, then look out. These kinds of divorces can make that estimate of $18,000 seem like pocket change. Not only can the price of this litigation go ballistic, but it can also drag out in the courts for literally years. For those couples who wish to divorce and not allow their stage of emotional pain to interfere with the level of living they will be experiencing for the rest of their lives, there are ways to keep the cost of divorce from ruining their future.

If it is at all possible divorcing couples need to set their anger aside so that they can negotiate without the end sight of having sweet revenge propelling them forward. This only leads to clouded vision when it comes to the settlement process. Choosing a lawyer is also another important consideration. Interviewing your attorney for the job of representing you is an extremely smart decision. This affords the suing person an opportunity to see if they and their attorney have compatible views of what is at stake. Make sure that your lawyer understands what it is you want accomplished in the end and how much you wish them to be allowed to bill.

It can never be stressed enough that you and your soon to be ex-mate should try and cooperate with each other for the best possible outcome. Try to understand that divorce does not have to be a situation where no one wins except the law firm. Discuss important issues such as life insurance, retirement, wills, and dividing assets so that each side can have a decent life when all the dust settles. If there are children involved, try and put their emotional health and future in the forefront, ahead of the animosity that may be between you and your spouse. It can never be stressed enough that children model what they witness, especially from their parents. If they see that adults can settle disagreements without causing further pain, a greater gift cannot be given from their parents. Divorce is not what couples think about when they enter into married life, but, if it does occur, it can be accomplished with both sides coming out on the other side with financial stability intact.
